The JMJ dress code is established to protect the dignity and modesty of all members. We hope that everything we do, even what we wear, will glorify God.
“Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with dignity of persons and their solidarity.”

- All clothing should fit comfortably, neither so tight nor so loose that undergarments are visible.
- Shorts, skirts or dresses should be at least as long as the child’s middle finger when they hang their arms by their sides.
- Dresses must cover the back and have a modest neckline.
- Shirts must be long enough to cover the midriff. Tops must cover the back and have a modest neckline. Halters, tank tops, tube tops and spaghetti straps are discouraged as they do not provide enough coverage to protect modesty.
- Clothing that may appear to have an anti-Christian message will not be permitted.
- Shirts with writings that include crude language, promotion of alcohol or drug use or with vulgar or unkind writing, scary or obscene pictures, etc. will not be permitted.
- Out of respect for all liturgies and prayers and when pledging allegiance to the U.S. flag, male youth and adults should remove any headwear.
- On dressier occasions, heels should be no more 2 inches high and of a modest style.
- When JMJ events include swimming, bathing suits should be modest. Shirts or cover-ups must be worn when not in the water.
- Anyone serving as a lector, cantor or as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion for any JMJ Liturgical celebrations is asked to wear long pants or a skirt.
- Hair should be clean and neat in style.
- When JMJ events include dance music we hope all will feel welcome to join in the dance! No moves that appear tasteless and vulgar will be permitted. We invite you to have a great time, but please keep it clean!
JMJ has a dress code for our students for several reasons:
- Encourages distinctions of character and personality instead of appearance
- Places emphasis on learning, not clothing, hairstyles or trends
- Reduces peer pressure and social stigmas
